About us

Started by neighbours, run by neighbours

Siyakhula Reading Trust

Siyakhula began in 2012 when retired teacher Nomsa Mgijima started reading to six children on her stoep in Site C. Within a year, forty children were coming every Saturday, and her neighbours offered their time, their books and a shipping container that became our first library.

Today we are a registered non-profit with four staff and more than 120 volunteers, most of them parents, students and pensioners from Khayelitsha. Every rand we receive goes into books, training and the clubs.

Mother tongue first

Children learn to love reading fastest in their home language, so we stock isiXhosa books first.

Community led

Our volunteers and board members live in the neighbourhoods we serve.

Open books

Our audited financial statements are published every year for any donor to read.
