Our story

From a market table to a studio

Kaya Thread Studio

Designer Palesa Mokoena started Kaya Thread in 2018, selling six shirts at a Saturday market in Maboneng. They sold out before lunch. She spent the next year sewing at night and saving for her first industrial machine.

Today Kaya Thread is a studio and shop of eight people in Braamfontein. We release two main collections a year, plus small drops when a special fabric comes in, and we make to order in sizes 6 to 24.

Designed, cut and sewn in Johannesburg, using South African fabric wherever we can.
